Vulkan is a low-overhead, cross-platform graphics and compute API, originally announced at GDC 2015 by the Khronos Group and released in February 2016. It is built upon components of AMD's Mantle API and is targeted at high-performance, real-time 3D graphics applications such as games and interactive media.


Vulkan has been designed with fully portability across multiple desktop and mobile applications in mind. The API is currently available on:

  • Windows

  • Linux (including SteamOS and Tizen)

  • Android
